South Portland, Maine

South Portland is a coastal city in southern Maine, with a population of just over 23,000. Much of South Portland's commercial and industrial activity is located on the west side of the city, while the east side houses a community college, museums, parks and beaches. The Maine Mall, a major employer with 140 shops and businesses, is the largest mall in Maine, and attracts some 13 million visitors annually. Fairchild Semiconductor has operated its manufacturing plant continuously since 1962. South Portland was settled in 1630 as part of Cape Elizabeth, and remained for many years a residential and farming community. In 1895, after a dispute over water sources, South Portland incorporated as a separate town, and became a city three years later. South Portland continued its quiet existence until 1940, when Todd-Bath Iron Shipbuilding Corporation established a shipyard. As the United States entered World War II, the yard combined with South Portland Shipbuilding Corp. to form New England Shipbuilding Corporation, which would turn out more than 10% of the country's Liberty Ships and at its height employed 30,000 people, many of them women. The combined yards closed shortly after the war. A manufacturing lull followed, with Fairchild Semiconductor and National Semiconductor filling the void until the Maine Mall opened its doors in 1971, signaling a shift towards a more retail and service oriented economy. South Portland has also become a major oil port for the east coast. Millions of barrels of oil enter the port each year, bound for the Portland-Montreal Pipeline. In addition, Pan Am Railways runs New England's largest rail yard, the Rigby Yard, built by the Portland Terminal Company in 1922.
