Mayfield, Kentucky

Mayfield is a city in and the county seat of Graves County. Named after Mayfield Creek, Mayfield is located in the center of the “Jackson Purchase”, an eight-county region purchased by Isaac Shelby and Andrew Jackson from the Chickasaw Indians in 1818. This fertile land attracted early settlers from Virginia, North and South Carolina and Tennessee who offered education and culture and a determination to succeed on the land. As craftsmen and farmers they established roots to blend a unique political, economic, and social environment. The completion of the Memphis, New Orleans and Northern Railroad in 1858 connected Mayfield to the larger world. Beginning with the establishment of the Mayfield Woolen Mills in 1860, the manufacture of clothing was a major industry in Mayfield for a century. The town was also a large market for loose-leaf tobacco. Mayfield’s western Kentucky charm, as well as its sporting events, cultural activities and historical districts attract visitors and residents alike. Popular attractions in and around Mayfield include the Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park, Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site, River Heritage Museum, and Natchez Trace National Park. Today, Mayfield is home to more than 10,000 residents.
