Mason City occupies 26.2 square miles in north central Iowa and is home to an estimated population of 28,000. The city has served as the seat of Cerro Gordo County since 1858. Prior to receiving its present-day name, the city was known variously as Shibboleth, Masonic Grove, and Masonville. Mason City is recognized for having the largest concentration of Prairie School architecture, more than any city in Iowa. Approximately seventeen of these buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
