Dubuque, Iowa

The city of Dubuque is the county seat of Dubuque County, Iowa. It was settled at the southern end of a large, flat plain along the Mississippi River and officially chartered in 1833. Dubuque’s population is over 57,500, making it the ninth-largest city in Iowa. The city is home to a large tourist industry, driven by its unique architecture, and river location. Dubuque attracts more than 1,500,000 tourists annually. Also, it is home to five institutions of higher education, making it a center for culture and learning.
By the late 19th Century, Dubuque became a center for the timber industry, and was later dominated by various mill working businesses. Also important were boat building, brewing, and later, the railroad industry. Early in the 20th Century, Dubuque grew significantly and industrial activity remained the mainstay of the economy until the late 1980s. However, a series of changes in manufacturing, and the onset of the "Farm Crisis" led to a large decline in the sector. Though industry still plays a role in the city, in recent decades, the economy has recently witnessed substantial growth and diversification in other areas. Today, health care, education, tourism, publishing, and financial services are all important sectors of the city's expanding business climate. Some companies with a significant presence in the Dubuque area include: Finley Hospital, The McGraw-Hill Companies, Diamond Jo Casino, A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing, and Alliant Energy.
Dubuque has a long history of manufacturing activity in industries known for their use of asbestos materials, making asbestos exposure, and the risk of mesothelioma cancer, an ongoing concern for workers and loved ones.
