Rock Island Railroad built the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River in 1856, which connected Davenport to Rock Island, Illinois. This railway connection significantly improved transportation and commerce with Chicago. Davenport experienced a boom after World War II. Oscar Mayer, Ralston Purina, and other companies built plants in west Davenport. During the 1970s and 1980s, Davenport’s local businesses and industries declined and the city was also negatively affected by the farm crisis. The 1990s, in contrast, exhibited signs of resurgence for the city. In recent years, renovations and building additions have occurred to revitalize the downtown area. Today, Davenport's biggest labor industry is manufacturing. Davenport and the surrounding Quad Cities have a few major sources of employment including the Rock Island Arsenal, KONE, Inc., and Alcoa.
