La Porte, Indiana

The city of La Porte occupies 12.2 square miles in the geographic center of La Porte County in northwest Indiana. It is the county’s second largest city, with a population of about 22,000, and serves as the county seat. La Porte is one of two principal cities of the Michigan City-La Porte, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Founded in 1832, La Porte has maintained strong connections to both the agricultural and the manufacturing industry. Among the widely recognized companies established in La Porte early on was the Advance-Rumely tractor company, builder of the Rumely Oil-Pull Tractor Engine. This tractor was largely considered to have played a pivotal role in the agricultural development of the Great Plains, particularly for the cultivation of wheat. By 1869, the company was the largest employer in La Port. A wide variety of other businesses prospered from the area, from the processing of food to the production of a variety of bicycles, baby carriages and the automobile. During the 1850s, numerous maple trees were planted along Indiana and Michigan avenues in La Porte by local resident Sebastian Lay. Subsequently, La Porte became known as the 'Maple City'. Today, Indiana and Michigan avenues comprise a historic district in the city, containing many homes and structures of architectural and historical interest.
