Elkhart, Indiana

Elkhart, home to just over 50,000 residents, is a city in Elkhart County, Indiana. Situated along the St. Joseph and Elkhart Rivers, the city of Elkhart is 15 miles east of South Bend and 150 miles north of Indianapolis. Elkhart is largely recognized for two industries: recreational vehicles and musical instruments; and for decades has been referenced as the "RV Capital of the World" and the "Band Instrument Capital of the World". Other notable industries in Elkhart include pharmaceuticals, electronic components, jewelry, manufactured housing and mobile homes, and some small and large shops which support the RV industry.

By the late 19th century and early 20th century, musical instrument factories and numerous mills set up shop which formed the base of Elkhart’s economy. The Miles Medical Company launched in 1884 and later produced products like Alka-Seltzer and Flintstones Vitamins. In 1979, the Miles Medical Company was purchased by Bayer, and by 2006, Bayer had pulled all manufacturing out of Elkhart. Most of the facilities were torn down while just a few buildings remain, mostly unused. Elkhart Brass Manufacturing has been a cornerstone of Elkhart's industrial base, and become a global leader in the creation of innovative fire-fighting equipment. The city is also home to the Robert Young Rail Yards, which are the second largest freight classification yards in the world.
