Initially known as "Little Fort," the village became the county seat in 1841, and was incorporated as Waukegan in 1849. Beer brewing, meat packing and shipbuilding were among the early manufacturing efforts. In the 20th century, Waukegan became more heavily industrialized. Outboard Marine Company (later OMC) was founded in 1929 by the inventor of Evinrude boat motors. OMC declared bankruptcy in 2000.
