Morris, Illinois

Morris is a city on the Illinois River in Grundy County, Illinois. It is the county seat of Grundy County, with a population of about 13,600. Founded in 1853, Morris retains an active historic downtown business district. Morris has seen a variety of manufacturing businesses over the years, from cigars to chemicals. Power generation is one of the city's most prominent industries today, as Morris is home to three nuclear power plants, including Dresden Nuclear Power Station. Other notable employers include Lyondell Chemical Company and Morris Hospital, which was founded in 1906. Morris also has several municipal parks and two state parks.
By 1905, manufacturers active in the city included Morris Lumber Company, Nickel Manufacturing Company, Woelfel Leather Company, and the Morris Oatmeal Company. The latter was subsequently acquired by Quaker Oats, which operated the plant until 1921. The site of the Allen Paper Car Wheel Company, founded in 1881, was occupied by several companies over the years, but always produced paper products until its last occupant, Federal Paperboard, closed in 1980. Gebhard Brewing Company was founded in 1866, and closed in 1919. The brewery building, which dates from the 1880s, was later occupied by a flour mill, and is still standing, though no longer in use. After World War II, work began on the Dresden Generating Station, the first privately-funded U.S. nuclear power plant. The first reactor went online in 1960, and was followed by two others in 1970. The original reactor was decommissioned in 1978, while units 2 and 3 are operated by Exelon Corporation.
