Moline, Illinois
Moline is a city on the Mississippi River in Rock Island County, Illinois. First incorporated in 1848, Moline currently has a population of nearly 50,800. Deere & Company, makers of John Deere farm equipment, have long been Moline's major industry. The company is still headquartered in Moline, and a major employer, although most of the manufacturing facilities have moved elsewhere. In recent decades, the city has transitioned from a manufacturing and industrial focus to a retail, transportation and cultural hub. Other top employers include Black Hawk College, Group O and elevator manufacturers Kone Corporation.
Moline was planned as a factory town and attracted industry almost immediately. In 1848, John Deere moved his steel plow company to the newly-incorporated town. The business grew along with the town, and the transcontinental railroad brought a regular influx of immigrants after 1854. Deere & Company continued to expand, creating a need for housing for its growing workforce. Moline's citizens, who had gained a reputation for being temperate, hard-working and thrifty, frequently saved their earnings towards building their own homes. As a result, Moline grew in orderly fashion, with factories and mills concentrated towards the riverfront, and retail and commercial areas in the center of town. Municipal lighting, water and electric streetcars brought another wave of growth at the beginning of the 20th century. Newer Moline industries included automobile manufacturing (Velie Motor Corporation, Moline Automobile Corporation), pipe organs, and cabinetry. The Moline Furniture Works made fine furniture from 1898 until about the 1970s. Towards the end of the 20th century, manufacturing has declined, and Moline has focused more on retail, entertainment and tourism.
Moline's lengthy history of manufacturing and construction make asbestos exposure an ongoing concern. Workers and their loved ones who have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk for pleural mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. If you were exposed to asbestos in Moline and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
