Galesburg, Illinois
Founded in 1837, Galesburg is the county seat of Knox County. Home to more than 33,000 residents, Galesburg is located in the northwest region of Illinois approximately 50 miles east of the Mississippi River. Galesburg's roots as a religious-educational colony are evident in Knox College, a private four-year liberal arts college and Illinois' fourth oldest college. The Old Main building at Knox College has the distinction of being the only building still standing where a Lincoln-Douglas debate, the fifth and most famous debate, was held in 1858. Galesburg was the site of the first anti-slavery society in the state of Illinois and a stop on the underground railroad.
Throughout much of its history, the city of Galesburg has been tied to the railroad industry. The presence of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in the late 1800s significantly influenced Galesburg's development as a commercial and industrial center in Western Illinois making this city one of the few to be served by multiple railroads and even fewer to have multiple railroad depots. Eventually, both tracks merged under the ownership of Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF Railway), carrying an average of seven trains per hour between them. Some of the major employers in Galesburg today, besides Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, include Galesburg Public Schools, Galesburg Cottage Hospital, and the County of Knox.
