Freeport, Illinois
Freeport is the county seat of Stephenson County and home to nearly 27,000 residents. Freeport, located in northwest Illinois, about 25 miles west of Rockford and 20 miles south of the Wisconsin Border, is at the center of a large agricultural area. Originally the city was named Winneshiek; however, when it was incorporated in 1855, Freeport was the established name. The name was taken from Freeport's founder, Tutty Baker, who was credited with running a "Free Port" on the Pecatonica River. Freeport is also known as "Pretzel City USA." The pretzel became the city's trademark when the Billerbeck Baker, which was established in 1869, flooded Freeport with pretzels. Also, the historic second debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas took place in Freeport on August 27, 1858.
As an industrial center, Freeport is home to several Fortune 500 companies including Honeywell’s Sensing and Control division has several plants within the city; Titan Tires known worldwide for its automobile, truck, and farm tractor tires; and Newell Window Furnishings, a division of Newell Rubbermaid.
