Chicago Heights, Illinois

The city of Chicago Heights is located six miles from the Indiana border at the crossroads of the Dixie Highway and Lincoln Highway. Originally named "Thorn Grove" by early farmers who settled there, it was not until the early 1890's that the city was re-named "Chicago Heights" by a group of developers determined to establish the community as an outer-ring industrial suburb. The city quickly became a haven for immigrants from Poland, Ireland, and Italy. Today, the city’s economic and ethnic diversity is reflected in the variety of residential neighborhoods housing over 31,000 residents.
The early developers of Chicago Heights were successful in recruiting large-scale heavy industries such as Inland Steel, and as a result, community growth and development progressed quickly as the influx of immigrants increased. In the 1940s, Chicago Heights factories worked around the clock to produce steel, chemical, and war materials of every kind. Established nearly a century ago, Chicago Heights Steel is the only special market mill in the United States that rolls billet and rail steel. Because of their success, Chicago Heights Steel employed a large number of people over the years. In the 1970s, a change in retail patterns threatened the commercial center of Chicago Heights, and heavy manufacturing employment became less reliable. It was not until the prosperity of the 1990s that Chicago Heights' industrial base was again stabilized.
