Aurora, Illinois
Aurora is a city in the Chicago metropolitan area of Illinois. Incorporated in 1845, Aurora occupies an area of nearly 40 square miles on both sides of the Fox River, including Stolp Island in the middle of the River. Aurora was one of the first cities in the country to use all-electric municipal lighting, earning it the nickname "City of Lights". The second largest city in Illinois, Aurora has a population of 157,267. Today, the sprawling city encompasses commercial, residential and retail areas, four historic districts and many cultural attractions, including the historic Paramount Theatre, and the Phillips Park Zoo.
Aurora was settled in 1834 by Joseph McCarty, who camped on the island while traveling West, and decided to stay. With the help of his brother, Samuel, he established the settlement of McCarty Mills. The name was changed to Aurora in 1837, when the first Post Office opened. The McCarty brothers built saw and grist mills on the East Side, which continued to develop as an industrial area, while across the river, the West Side gained a more affluent, professional character. Aurora has thus long had a mostly congenial "East Side-West Side" rivalry, resulting in most of the original public buildings being built on Stolp Island. In the 19th century, immigrants arrived to work in the East Side factories, dominated by the construction yards and repair shops of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. Other notable Aurora manufacturers have included: Lyon Workspace Products, The Aurora Silverplate Manufacturing Company, Stephens-Adamson Company, Caterpillar Inc., and Western Wheeled Scraper Works (later Austin-Western Inc.). The railroad yards closed in 1974, starting an economic slide which has recently begun to reverse itself with development of a casino and business parks on the outskirts of the city.
