Boise, Idaho

Located 40 miles east of the Oregon border, Boise is the capital and most heavily populated city in the state of Idaho. Boise serves as county seat of Ada County and is the largest city between Salt Lake City, Utah and Portland, Oregon, ranking as the 98th largest city in the United States. The city was founded in 1834 as a trading post for wagons traveling along the Oregon Trail before becoming an incorporated city in 1864.

After the gold boom ended in the early 20th century Boise faced an uphill battle for survival due to the town’s isolated location, far off from major lines of transportation. It was not until the 1920s when railway service finally reached Boise and the city began to experience economic growth. During World War II, the military had a strong presence in Boise after establishing a flying and training base at Gowen Field. Gowen Field is now known as Boise Airport, a commercial and general aviation airport located three miles south of downtown Boise. In 1957, Boise Cascade Corporation, a pulp and paper company, was established as a result of a merger between Boise-Payette Lumber Company of Boise and the Cascade Lumber Company of Yakima, Washington. The Boise Cascade Paper Mill is still based in the city today, operating under the “OfficeMax” name since 2003. The area’s largest employers currently headquartered in Boise are Boise Cascade LLC, Idaho Pacific Lumber Company, Micron Technology, and IDACORP (parent company of Idaho Power).
