Griffin, Georgia
The area now known as Griffin was originally inhabited by the Creek Indians and was later settled by Europeans in the early 1820s. Griffin serves as the county seat of Spalding County and was officially incorporated in 1843, one year after the first steam engine ran through the city.
Railroad construction attracted cotton growers to the city, which fueled the local economy and before long, Griffin matured into a thriving southeastern city.
Major industry in the early 20th century in Griffin was cotton crops and textile. Cherokee Mills, now known as Dundee Mills, was purchased in 1913 and ten years later, Lowell Bleachery South Inc. was formed as a joint venture by Kincaid Manufacturing and Lowell Bleachery. Griffin is also home to Towaligo Falls Power Company, Pomona Products Company and Doc Holliday, the Western legend.
