East Point, Georgia
East Point, Georgia sits just southwest of Atlanta in Fulton County. The name East Point is based on the city’s location at the eastern most point of the former Atlanta & West Point Railroad. Sixteen families initially formed the citizenry of East Point in 1870 but soon thereafter industry developed, and by 1880 East Point had two churches, a school, a saw mill, post office, railway, and two gristmills.
During the Civil War era, East Point ranked as one of the major grain and cotton growing centers in the state. The city’s pleasant climate and proximity to the railroad also led it to become a bustling manufacturing community. One of East Point’s oldest local companies, W.C. Meredith Company, was founded in 1921 and continues to operate facilities in the city. In its early days W.C. Meredith Company contracted with Southern Bell to produce Mereduc, an underground wooden conduit. At present, the East Point company manufactures and supplies Pentachlorophenol treated utility poles to Bell South, Verizon, Forest Technology Sales, and other electric utilities throughout the eastern United States. Other manufacturing facilities located in East Point include Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (also known as PPG Industries), Southern Bell, and National Biscuit Company (Nabisco).
