By the end of the 19th century Palatka rivaled Jacksonville as the major port on the St. Johns River; Palatka had matured into a bustling center for transportation, freight, lumber, citrus, and tourism The Great Freeze of 1895 permanently destroyed Palatka’s citrus industry, forcing the community rely on industries dependent on wood and its byproducts Palatka became home to several facilities over the years, including Palatka Paper Mill, Hudson Pulp & Paper Company (currently owned and operated by Georgia Pacific), Scott Paper Mill, and Florida Pulp & Paper Company. By the 1970s, Palatka’s valuable position on the St. Johns River was fully realized by the shipbuilding industry Offshore Shipbuilding opened a facility in Palatka and specialized in repair and construction of a wide range of ships and other watercrafts; tugboats, barges, passenger ships, ferries and fishing boats were worked on at the facility Today, the facility is owned and operated by the St. John Shipbuilding company.
