Lake City, Florida

Lake City is the county seat of Columbia County and has a population of just over 12,000. At the time of settlement in 1830, the city was named Alligator after the original Seminole village that was located on the same site. By 1859, the city became incorporated and changed its name to Lake City. Local bodies of water include Lake DeSoto, Lake Isabella, Alligator Lake, and Lake Hamburg. Lake City’s current large employers are the V.A. Hospital, Pcs Phosphate, and TIMCO Aviation Services.

By the early 20th century, Lake City prospered as a central railroad junction, with lines crossing from the Seaboard Air Line, Atlantic Coast Line, Georgia Southern Line, and the Florida Railroad Line. Turpentine, lumber, and pulpwood made up the core of local economy. During World War II, the U.S. Navy constructed an airport on 1,250 acres of land what is now known as Lake City Municipal Airport. In its early days the airport hosted the US Air Operation Training Station where Navy and Marine Corps pilots trained with PV-1 Venturas and PV2-Harpoons. In addition to general aviation use, the airport hosts an industrial aviation facility that was formerly known as Aero Corporation. The facility is currently run by TIMCO Aviation Services, a company specializing in modification and repair of Boeing 727 and Boeing 737 airliners and the military’s C-130 Hercules and P-3 Orion. Since 2000, four major corporations have brought business to Lake City: Hunter Panels, New Millennium, Target Distribution Center, and United States Cold Storage.
