New Castle, Delaware

Founded in 1651, the historic town of New Castle is located six miles south of Wilmington in the heart of Brandywine Valley near the Delaware River. New Castle’s location made it an ideal transfer point for coastal trips and as a result, it became the colonial capital of Delaware and the first state capitol prior to Dover. New Castle is where William Penn took his first steps on American soil and where two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas McKean and George Read, made their homes. Many examples of colonial, Dutch and Federal architecture can be found in town, with nearly all historic buildings occupied and in use today.

Abex Corporation operated a steel plant in New Castle, which was known as American Manganese Steel at one point in time. The company had a considerable economic effect on the New Castle area and fabricated an assortment of castings such as railroad frogs, steam shovel buckets, points, lips and links. Tidewater Oil Refinery and Amoco Oil Company based their operations in New Castle as well.
