Delaware City, Delaware

Located on the Delaware River and original Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, Delaware City is a small port town with a rich history and architectural heritage still evident today. Over 250 structures form one of the largest historic districts in the state. Fort Delaware, which initially served as a prisoner-of-war camp for captured Confederate soldiers, continues to stand guard over the Delaware River. Delaware City traces its origins back to 1826, when the Newbold family purchased a tract of land and drew plans for the town. They hoped Delaware City would one day rival Philadelphia as a Delaware River port and commercial center.

Delaware City’s prime location on the eastern terminus of the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal led the town to become an operating base and way station for a substantial amount of shipping-related activities. Peaches, fish and caviar were among Delaware City’s first commerce. Twentieth-century industry arrived in the 1950s which resulted in the construction of a sizeable industrial complex, and in 1956, Delaware City Refinery was established. Originally owned by Getty Oil, the refinery is presently operated by Motiva Enterprises, a joint venture of Shell Oil Company and Saudi Refining. Delaware City Refinery’s major products include gasoline, heating oil, diesel and propane.
