Claymont, Delaware
Located on the banks of Naamans Creek on the Delaware River, the community now known as Claymont has been inhabited steadily since before 1200 A.D. The Dutch, who were the first Europeans to arrive, named the creek and settlement Naamans, after the Lenape Indians’ chief residing along the creek. The settlement grew and Claymont was officially named in 1856.
Claymont grew quickly from the 17th century through the 20th century, first with gristmills, farms and related ancillary industries, and later with lumber mills, a steel mill, and a chemical plant. General Chemical Company, formerly known as Allied Chemical, is located in Claymont and is a chemical manufacturing giant responsible for pioneering innovative processes in the field. Alkalis, coke ovens, coal tar, alum, soda ash and sulfur-based chemicals were products manufactured during wartime when the company earned the Army Navy “E” award for excellence. Phoenix Steel Corporation, or Phoenixville Foundry, is another impressive symbol of Claymont’s illustrious industrial past. Phoenix produced pig iron, wrought iron and later went on to create the Griffen gun. The company became an imposing player in the steel and iron industry, even exporting puddled iron to Paris, France to be used in construction of the Eiffel Tower. Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation, Worth Steel Company and Westinghouse Electric Company operated sites on Claymont land as well. The decline of the iron, steel and other manufacturing industries in recent years left many of these sites abandoned, however, the Claymont community has gathered together to rebuild the area in what some have called the single, largest redevelopment project in the county.
Exposure to asbestos in the workplace has long been a problem in Claymont predominantly in the manufacturing and industrial settings. Workers in Claymont who believe they have been exposed to asbestos may be at risk to develop malignant mesothelioma.
