Wilton, Connecticut

Wilton, Connecticut is located in the heart of Fairfield County and is home to approximately 18,000 residents. Rich in New England history and charm, Wilton is a rural residential town that boasts a mix of residential, commercial, and undeveloped open areas. Initially part of Norwalk, Wilton was granted a separate town government status by an act of the Connecticut General Assembly in 1802.

While Wilton was largely an agricultural community, industry was also prevalent, particularly in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Industries such as shoemaking, shirt making, carriage building, and distilleries were common. Mills of various types developed along the streams. The Gilbert and Bennett Manufacturing Company began producing wire sieves in 1834. After the Civil War, Wilton's population declined and many farms were abandoned. By the early 20th Century, Wilton's community was changing from agricultural to one of commuters. The abandoned farms were discovered by New Yorkers for summer homes. Soon after World War II, residential subdivisions brought a new look to Wilton's landscape. Light industry began moving into Wilton. Accordingly, growth in population and businesses demanded need for new schools, new roads, executive offices, as well as other supportive services. Wilton's largest period of growth was from 1950 to 1970, when the population grew from approximately 4,500 to 13,500. Wilton's transformation from a small farming town to a suburban residential community has been controlled by zoning and through the preservation of the town's older colonial landmarks.

Wilton has experienced significant residential, municipal and commercial development, particularly during the 20th century, which has made asbestos exposure a concern for construction workers and others.
