Westport, Connecticut

Westport is a coastal town in Fairfield County situated on the southwestern coast of Connecticut. Westport is bordered by Norwalk, Weston, Wilton and Fairfield and Long Island Sound. Interstate 95, the Merritt Parkway and U.S. 1, as well as the Saugatuck River, all pass through Westport. Westport has an estimated population of nearly 27,000. It is the second wealthiest town in Connecticut after Darien. Newsweek magazine ranked Staples High School, Westport's only public high school, 452nd on a list of the best 1,000 high schools in the country in 2005. The district also has two middle schools, Bedford and Coleytown middle schools; and five elementary schools including Coleytown, Greens Farms, Long Lots, King's Highway, and Saugatuck Elementary schools. Westport is home to the Westport Country Playhouse, a regional theater founded in 1930. Today, Westport has a thriving downtown area and boasts the ambiance of a New England town with the conveniences of a modern community.

Though colonists settled along the Saugatuck River as early as 1639, it wasn't until 1835 that Westport was officially incorporated as a town. During the first several decades after its incorporation, Westport prospered as an agricultural community and distinguished itself as the nation's leading onion-growing center. During the 1900s, Westport earned the reputation as an artist’s colony and cultural center. Today, Westport is home to many corporate headquarters and more than 600 retailers. Prominent companies in Westport include Terex, Playtex Products Inc., dLife, and Canaan Partners. Also, Save the Children, a nonprofit organization, is based in Westport and employs approximately 200 people.
