West Haven, Connecticut
In 1921, West Haven separated from Orange to become an independent town. Later, in 1961, West Haven was incorporated as a city and became "Connecticut's Youngest City." Home to more than 52,000 residents, West Haven is located in New Haven County, situated on the western shore of New Haven Harbor in south central Connecticut. Today, West Haven is home to the University of New Haven, the U.S. Veterans Affairs Hospital, and Yale Baseball Field.
From colonial times until at least the 1940s, West Haven was largely involved in shipping. Early on ships from West Haven sailed to the West Indies and South America for spices, silks, rum, sugar, etc. in return for local timber. Industry was also a significant aspect of the local economy. In the late 1800s, the West Haven and American Buckle Shop was the first to manufacture buckles, buttons, clips, and braces in West Haven. Also during this time, the Savin Rock section of West Haven was the site of the Savin Rock Amusement Park, a popular seaside resort, until it closed in the 1960s. Today the beachfront area boasts a walk and bike path. In 1927, Lender's Beigel Bakery was founded in West Haven by Polish immigrant Harry Lender primarily served delicatessens in New York City. Later, Lender's sons, took over the business and specialized in "flash-frozen" bagels, allowing the bagels to be sold in stores nationwide. By 1984, the company had grown to 600 employees and was sold to Kraft Foods. During World War II, Armstrong Rubber Company manufactured tires and rafts for the military. Bayer Pharmaceuticals North America had a plant in West Haven until it ceased operations in 2006. The former Bayer campus was purchased in 2007 by Yale University.
