West Hartford, Connecticut

Incorporated in 1854, West Hartford is a town/small city in Hartford County with an estimated population of nearly 64,000. West Hartford borders Hartford, Bloomfield, Newington, Farmington, and Avon. In 2010, Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine named West Hartford one of the nation's "10 Great Cities for Raising Families" and "10 Best Cities for the Next Decade". In the same year, CNN Money ranked West Hartford as the 55th "Best Small City in America." West Hartford’s town motto is "Where city style meets village charm."

While West Hartford largely remained rooted in agriculture into the early 1900s, the town also prospered as a manufacturing and industrial community. In the 18th century, grist, saw, and carding mills along with blacksmith shops, tanneries, and general sprung up around the community to support and help promote agriculture. Pottery and brick works were the first significant industries in West Hartford. In 1879, the Trout Brook Ice & Feed Company was established. Ice was harvested from Trout Brook in the winter, formed into blocks which were used for refrigeration locally and shipped as far away as New York City. By the late 19th century and early 20th century, the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad ran through town prompting a variety of companies to emerge in this area including Whitlock Coil Pipe Company, Royal Typewriter, Wiremold, Abbot Ball, and Colt's Manufacturing. The largest West Hartford manufacturer was Pratt & Whitney; at its height of success, Pratt & Whitney employed over 7,000 people. In the 1960s and 1970s, a variety of stores began to crop up in the Corbin's Corner section of town including the Westfarms Mall and Bishops Corner. West Hartford is also home to several colleges and universities including University of Hartford, Saint Joseph College and UConn's Hartford campus.
