Waterbury, Connecticut

Initially called "Matetacoke" by the Tunxis Native American Tribe, the settlement was renamed to Waterbury and added as the 28th town in the Connecticut colony in 1686. Incorporated as a city in 1853, Waterbury is the fifth largest city in Connecticut occupying 28.9 square miles. Today, the city is known for its advanced technology, historic architecture, and diverse neighborhoods.

Growth in Waterbury for the first 100 years was slow. It wasn't until the early 1800s that Waterbury gained industrial power when it began making brass. Waterbury earned a reputation for the quality and durability and became known as a leading manufacturer of brassware in the United States earning the nickname "Brass City". At its peak in the 1940s, 10,000 people worked at Scoville Brass (later renamed Century Brass). Other prominent brass companies headquartered in Waterbury were Chase Brass and Anaconda American Brass. Brass buttons, buckles, bells and bullets were just a few of the products that were found in stores and homes throughout the country. Robert H. Ingersoll's one-dollar pocket watch was another famous Waterbury product of the mid-1900s. Five million pocket watches were sold. After this, the clock industry became as vital as Waterbury's famed brass industry. Evidence of these two significant industries can still be seen in Waterbury, as a number of clock towers and old brass factories have become landmarks.

With the closing of the last brass shop in the 1970s, Waterbury faced a grim future. By 1983, Waterbury had diversified its economy, attracting new manufacturing, research, and service firms. In addition, Waterbury is working to revamp the city's unused freight yards and warehouses and turn them into office space. Luxury hotels have been built, the city's south end is now home to the biggest mall in New England, and industrial parks in remodeled metal works factories are proving profitable.
