Trumbull, Connecticut

Initially settled as an extension of Stratford, Trumbull was incorporated as a town in 1791. The town was named for Jonathan Trumbull, the Connecticut governor during the Revolutionary War and a valued advisor to George Washington. Trumbull is located in Fairfield County and bordered by Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Shelton, and Stratford. Home to more than 35,000 residents, Trumbull boasts a small-town residential New England charm with a blend of retail, commercial, and light manufacturing activity. The town of Trumbull was ranked 68th in Money Magazine's "Top 100 Best Places to Live" in 2007, and 77th in 2009.

By the end of the 19th century, Trumbull had largely become a rural agricultural community as well as home to industries such as mining and manufacturing. Several major companies during this time included The Housatonic Railroad Company, Parlor Rock Amusement Park, Radcliffe's Woolen Mill, Long Hill Saw Mill, Tungsten Mining & Milling Company. In the early 1900's, however, floods destroyed the mills along the river, fire destroyed the Radcliffe Factory and the mining operations, and Parlor Rock closed. After World War II, Americans began migrating from cities to the suburbs, Trumbull experienced significant population growth and began developing residential neighborhoods. Its population grew by over 20,000 people between 1960 and 1970. Some of the larger employers located in Trumbull today include Cendant Corporation, Oxford Health Plans, Inc., Van Den Bergh Foods Co., and Unilever.
