Simsbury, Connecticut

Known initially as "Massacoh", Simsbury was officially named and incorporated as Connecticut's twenty-first town in May 1670 making it one of the state's oldest communities. Simsbury is a suburban town in Hartford County, located at the northern end of the Farmington Valley, approximately 14 miles west of the capital city Hartford. Over the past few decades, the town of Simsbury experienced significant development. Nonetheless, the town maintains a blend of commerce, rural atmosphere, and historic charm making it a quintessential New England Community. Simsbury is a town of many "firsts": copper was first discovered in Simsbury in 1705; the first operating steel mill was located in Simsbury; and the first copper coinage in America was started by Doctor Samuel Higley of Simsbury in 1737. Attractions in Simsbury include Connecticut's largest tree, the Pinchot Sycamore; a rare 19th century iron bridge; and the Phelps Tavern Museum and Homestead where visitors experience rural New England tavern life from 1786-1849. Simsbury is home to the Simsbury Airport and the International Skating Center of Connecticut.

In the early 19th century, industry in Simsbury largely comprised of cotton factories, tin ware factories, wire factories, grain distilleries, grist mills, saw mills, fabric and carpet mills. In 1836, the Ensign-Bickford Company started as a manufacturer of safety fuses for use in mining. Ensign-Bickford was the first manufacturer of safety fuses in the United States. A devastating fire in the 1860s wiped out much of Tariffville's manufacturing; however, Ensign-Bickford remained a thriving company (still headquartered in Simsbury operating as Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company) and for many years provided fire protection for the town of Simsbury. It also provided the capital and management to start up both the Simsbury Electric Company and the Village Water Company.
