Rockville, Connecticut

Rockville incorporated as a city in 1889. Initially, Rockville was a nameless village in Connecticut. Mail service was brought once a day by stagecoach from Vernon Center. In order for the community to have their own post office, the town needed a permanent name. Resident, Simon Chapman, suggested the name "Rockville" which derived as common expression understood by the surrounding areas was "Going to the Rock". Thus, Rockville became the official town name; however, it was not until 1842, that Rockville acquired its own post office. Rockville became a village within the town of Vernon when the two towns consolidated in 1965. Today, Rockville is a census-designated place and has a population of approximately 7,700. Much of Rockville has been designated as part of the Rockville Historic District and was added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1984. Home to Rockville is Rockville General Hospital, a 102-bed acute-care community hospital.

Rockville was largely a mill town. The Hockanum River (fed by the Shenipsit Lake which locals refer to as "The Snip"), was the primary provider of waterpower for local grist, saw and oil mills. The first textile mill was built in 1821. Power looms were introduced in 1826. The mills attracted people to this area and by 1836 the population grew to 440 consisting of 61 families including 89 children under the age of 10.
