Ridgefield, Connecticut

Ridgefield, named for the local terrain, was settled in 1708 and incorporated as a town one year later in 1709. Ridgefield is in Fairfield County positioned in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains and home to approximately 23,500 residents. Neighboring communities include Danbury, Redding and Wilton. The town secured its place in history when citizens defended their land against the British in the “Battle of Ridgefield” in 1777. For decades, town officials and residents alike have strived to maintain much of the 19th and early 20th century charm of the town, while incorporating modern day improvements in this growing community. Today, some of the Ridgefield’s largest employers include Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., Laurel Ridge Nursing Home and Advanced Specialty Care.

For many centuries, Ridgefield was largely a farming community; however other early occupations included hatters, tailors, weavers, carpenters, silversmiths and shoemakers. Industrialization began in the 1800s, starting with carriage manufacturing. By 1830, the Resseguie and Olmstead carriage “manufactory,” had become a local landmark. Other manufacturers of the time, produced candlesticks, furniture and shirts. Due to Ridgefield's lack of waterpower and location away from the main travel routes, it could not compete in the Industrial Revolution. As a result, many of the town's mills and shops closed and the population decreased. Soon wealthy and prominent New Yorkers found Ridgefield to be a quaint summer resort town and many eventually built mansion-sized vacation homes in town. After the Great Depression up through the 1970s, many of these estates were replaced with subdivisions that transformed the town into a suburban, bedroom community.
