Putnam, Connecticut

The town of Putnam, created from sections of Killingly, Pomfret, Woodstock and Thompson, was incorporated in 1855 and named in honor of Revolutionary War General Israel Putnam. Located in Windham County in northeastern Connecticut, Putnam has a small-town New England atmosphere and is home to just over 9,000 residents. Putnam offers several parks for outdoor recreation, antique and gift shops and a central historical district.

In 1806, one of the nation's first cotton mills was built in Putnam. By 1840, the textile industry in Putnam flourished due largely to the availability of waterpower and the opening of the railroad. The railroad would also play a significant role during the Civil War, when Putnam's mills provided clothing and other goods to Union soldiers. Devastation struck the town when the mill district was ravaged by the flood of 1955. Eventually, the industrial area of Putnam was rebuilt. Near the end of the twentieth century, the town, particularly Main Street, was revitalized and several abandoned mills and underutilized commercial buildings were transformed into a large antique center.
