Plainfield, Connecticut
Plainfield was incorporated as the town of "Quinebaug" in 1699, and then renamed one year later to its present day name. Plainfield is the southernmost town of Windham County and bordered by Canterbury, Brooklyn, Killingly, and Sterling. Home to approximately 14,600 residents, Plainfield is comprised of four villages: Plainfield, Moosup, Wauregan, and Central Village.
During the 18th century, agriculture was the basis of Plainfield's economy. However, during the 19th and 20th centuries, manufacturing became the town's primary economic driver. This was due in part to accessibility of the Moosup and Quinebaug Rivers which provided power to the different mills in town; and in part because four railways from Hartford, New York, Boston, and Providence intersected within the town. By 1880, the town's commercial activities were largely centered near the railroad crossings in Central Village, Moosup and Plainfield. The period between 1880 and 1920 was a particularly prosperous time in Plainfield. Accordingly, housing for workers, new schools and new churches were built, government services expanded and a trolley system that connected the villages was developed. The period between 1930 and 1940, on the other hand, was a trying time for Plainfield as many factories closed and Plainfield struggled to diversify its economy.
Asbestos exposure in the workplace has been an enduring problem in Plainfield as a result of its long tenure in the manufacturing industry where use of asbestos containing products was common, particularly at Plainfield Mills, National Manufacturing and Plainfield Plastics. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Plainfield, Connecticut, you may be at risk of developing mesothelioma cancer, an asbestos related disease.
