Orange, Connecticut

In 1639, the Rev. Peter Prudden bought the land, known today as Orange, from the Paugusset Indians for six coats, ten blankets, one kettle, twelve hatchets, twelve hoes, two dozen knives and a dozen small mirrors. Nearly two centuries later, in 1822, Orange was officially incorporated as its own town. Orange is located in New Haven County, in the New Haven-Milford metro area and is home to approximately 13,500 residents. Through the years, the town of Orange has maintained an open, rural New England residential community.

During the late eighteenth century and through the nineteenth century, textiles, saw, and grist mills sprang up along the Wepawaug and Race Brook Rivers in Orange, taking advantage of the waterpower. Also during this time, other occupations/trades included shoemakers, blacksmiths, masons. However, Orange largely remained a simple farming community until the mid-1940s when postwar residential construction began. Major employers in Orange include Bayer Pharmaceutical, Southern CT Gas Company, Sears Roebuck, Orange Plaza, and PEZ Candy.
