Norwich, Connecticut

Norwich is a city in New London County located in the southeastern section of Connecticut at the confluence of the Thames, Shetucket and Yantic Rivers. Norwich, long known as the "Rose of New England", was settled in 1659 and later incorporated as a city in 1784. The city has a rich Native American history and Colonial history as two notable tribal chiefs are buried here, and Benedict Arnold was born in town. Norwich encompasses some 26 square miles. It is a thriving city with a stable population, offering a wide range of municipal services, and a healthy outlook for residential and business growth.

In the late 18th and early 19th century, Norwich became a manufacturing city. Many large mills and factories were built along the Yantic and Shetucket Rivers. Connecticut's first paper mill was built at Yantic Falls in 1766. During this time, Norwich's major industry was textiles. New means of transportation, particularly steamboat service, development of turnpikes, and construction of the Norwich and Worcester Railroad, joined Norwich to New York and Boston solidifying its position as a prosperous shipping center and hub of eastern Connecticut. Other industry that thrived in Norwich during the 19th and 20th centuries included firearms, clock-making, furniture-making, iron foundries and Thermos bottles. Accordingly, the cities’ population grew and became more diverse. These new residents helped to build the city's schools, churches, and social centers.
