North Haven, Connecticut

North Haven separated from New Haven and incorporated as a town in 1786. Located in New Haven County, in the New Haven-Milford metro area, North Haven is a suburban residential community with a strong and growing commercial, retailing and manufacturing base. Major employers in North Haven include Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield and United States Surgical Corporation. In 2007, Money Magazine named North Haven as one of the top 100 places to live in the United States.

North Haven began as a largely an agricultural community. By the middle of the 1800s, however, about one-third of the residents worked in nonagricultural occupations like mechanics, shoemakers, and brickmakers. After the Civil War, the production of bricks increased as did the town’s population. In the early 1900s, public transportation and the automobile changed the way of life for the North Haven community. Population in North Haven quadrupled between 1940 and 1970, with the largest growth spurts occurring just after World War II and then again after Pratt & Whitney and Marlin Firearms opened. To accommodate the needs of North Haven's growing community, small residential communities were developed and new town buildings were constructed including the firehouse, library, five schools and police station. As of 2009, North Haven has an estimated population of 24,222.
