Newtown, Connecticut
Located in the hills of Connecticut, Newtown is a scenic town in Fairfield County. Newtown was founded in 1705 and incorporated in 1711. It is surrounded by Bethel, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Easton, Monroe, Oxford, Redding and Southbury. The town is 60 square miles, making it the state's fifth largest town based on area. Newtown's most notable landmark is the 110 foot flag pole, first erected in 1876, which stands in the middle of Main Street. With an estimated population of 29,000, Newtown combines the rural charm of a small New England town with the amenities of metropolitan suburbs.
Initially, Newtown was largely an agricultural town specializing in dairy farming, but during the 19th century, industry began to shape the community. By the early in the 1800s, small industries began to develop along Newtown's River, which supplied power to the water wheels of these shops and mills. For a brief time, several small hat shops set up in town. With larger hat factories nearby in neighboring towns of Danbury and Bethel, these smaller shops in Newtown couldn't compete and production of hats eventually ceased. An industry that did thrive during this time was button and comb manufacturers. At the height of success, there were 14 button shops operating in Newtown. Buttons and combs were originally made from the horns, bones and hooves of animals, but after the Civil War, plastic began to replace these materials and the industry shrunk. In 1926, the two remaining button shops went out of business. Another industry associated with Newtown was the manufacturing of rubber products. Around 1850, New York Belting and Packing, a manufacturer of belting and fire hose, opened. The company later moved its operations out of Newtown. Fortunately for Newtown, Fire Hose Co. of Rhode Island, one of New York Belting and Packing's competitors took over the factories and produced fabric fire hose until the mid-1970s. Between 1950 and 1990 the town’s population nearly tripled, from 7,500 to 21,000, creating strains in the town’s infrastructure and educational facilities. In recent years, small industry moved into Newtown including warehousing facilities for Georgia Pacific, Ethan Allen, Lazy Boy and Pitney Bowes.
Newtown has a rich history of industrialization and manufacturing, making asbestos exposure an issue for both factory and construction workers. Exposure to asbestos-containing materials puts workers and their loved ones at risk for developing mesothelioma cancer, an asbestos-related disease.
