New Milford, Connecticut

New Milford is located in the southern end of Litchfield County, in rural Western Connecticut, and is situated along the Housatonic River. Incorporated in 1712, New Milford was one of the earliest settlements in Litchfield County and served as a hub for surrounding rural communities. Despite continued growth and modernization through the years, New Milford maintains a quaint New England atmosphere and tradition complete with village art and craft fair days, parades, fireworks, community theatre, caroling, and summer concerts. New Milford's main street boasts a variety of specialty shops, antique stores, and gourmet restaurants.

During the latter half of the 19th century, agriculture, particularly tobacco growing and dairy farming, was the enduring industry in New Milford. During this time, the town continued a modest commercial and industrial growth. The first bank in Litchfield County was established in New Milford in 1852. A town hall had been built in 1875 and a village green was developed along Main Street. The Water Witch Engine Company, and local telephone and electricity companies formed. Other industry in New Milford during this time was the manufacturing of buttons, paint and varnish, hats, furniture, pottery and pasteboard. New Milford's worst disaster occurred in 1902 when the main business section of town was almost completely leveled by the ‘Great Fire’. Many businesses and families were displaced. However, by the mid-1900s, the town of New Milford began to recover and prosper once again. In the early 1950s, the Connecticut Light & Power Company began constructing its long-planned Shepaug hydroelectric dam. Simultaneously, the Scovill Manufacturing Company constructed the Century Brass Mill, a large plant for manufacture of copper and brass tubing. A few years later, in 1958, Kimberly-Clark Corporation constructed a paper products plant employing over 1,000 people. Subdivisions and new home construction surged during this time. Residential development continued at a steady pace up until 1980s as town land regulations tightened. Today, New Milford’s largest employers include Kimberly Clark, The Canterbury School, Nestle Company, New Milford Hospital, and the Town of New Milford.
