New London, Connecticut

Situated on the shores of both the Thames River and Long Island Sound, New London is a seaport city and a port of entry on the northeast coast of the United States. New London was the 13th town settled in Connecticut and was called Pequot until 1658 when the town's name was officially changed to its present day name. In 1784, New London was incorporated as a city. It is one of the smallest cities in Connecticut in terms of land area.

The city is also known as an historic whaling port, a multimodal transportation center, a learning center and an arts and cultural center. Connecticut's first printing press was established in New London in 1709. For several decades, beginning in the early 1800s, New London was the second busiest whaling port in the world. Much of the city's present architecture was funded by the wealth generated from whaling. New London is home to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Connecticut College, Mitchell College, Fort Trumbull, Ocean Beach Park, the United States Coast Guard Academy and America’s Tall Ship the Eagle. The City is currently undergoing a period of economic revitalization; major development initiatives are in place for the State Pier, the Downtown and the Fort Trumbull areas. Recently, Pfizer, Inc.'s $300 million dollar Global Research and Development Headquarters located along New London's waterfront was completed.
