New Canaan, Connecticut

New Canaan was incorporated in 1801 and is located in Fairfield County. Since the New Canaan parish was not initially planned as a town, it lacked common town characteristics like a main street or town hall. The first house was built in 1825 on Oenoke Ridge. Today, this building houses the Historical Society's library. The downtown area has several restaurants, an old movie theater, and antique shops. The town is one of the most affluent communities in the United States. The New Canaan Public Schools system is noted as one of the best in Connecticut. New Canaan has five public schools including New Canaan High School, Saxe Middle School and three elementary schools. It also offers three private schools including New Canaan Country School. New Canaan has two Metro-North railroad stations: the New Canaan station and the Talmadge Hill station and is approximately a one hour train ride to New York City. Notable residents of New Canaan have included David Letterman, Brian Williams, Harry Connick, Jr. and Glenn Beck.

New Canaan was primarily an agricultural community until Revolutionary War ended. The town's main industry was shoe making and as this industry began to prosper in the early 1800s, so did the community. Neighborhoods of cluster houses, mills, schools and a general store were developed. In the mid-1800's, the railroad attracted many wealthy residents from New York City. Initially, homes were built as summer retreats, but eventually became year-round homes creating the residential community that exists today.
