Middletown, Connecticut
Middletown is a city located in Middlesex County in the central part of the state and sits on the west bank of the Connecticut River. Middletown received its present name in 1653 and having expanded greatly throughout the eighteenth century, Middletown was incorporated as a city in 1784. Originally, Middletown was a bustling sailing port and then later became a thriving industrial center. Today, Middletown is known largely as a residential city with an estimated population of 48,000 and as a college town, home to Wesleyan University, one of the United States' leading liberal arts institutions. In the 1990s, a partnership between the city, the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce, and Wesleyan University invested in a project to revitalize Middletown's Main Street. Subsequently, an extensive variety of restaurants and businesses have opened.
During the 1700s, Middletown became the largest and most prosperous settlement in Connecticut. Middletown's port was thriving and comparable in importance to ports in Boston or New York. One-third of Middletown's residents were involved in merchant and maritime activities by the late 1700s. However, the demise of the port in the early 1800's was inevitable as a result of Britain’s imposed trade restrictions. Soon after, Middletown became a major center for firearms manufacturing. Gun manufacturers in the area supplied the majority of pistols to the U.S. government during the War of 1812. By the late 1800s, manufacturing was the mainstay of the Middletown's economy. The city was home to Wilcox Crittenden, a manufacturer of marine hardware; Royal Typewriters, a typewriter manufacturer; and several machine tool & die manufacturers. During the first part of the 20th century, Middletown enjoyed a thriving economic expansion as many of its factories, such as Russell Manufacturing, had shifted to producing war material. In the 1960s, Pratt and Whitney Aircraft opened a large plant and has remained a central economic force in the area. Concurrently, suburban developments replaced much of the city's remaining farms to accommodate local workers and commuters to surrounding cities.
In addition to Wesleyan University, the city is home to Middlesex Community College; two Catholic high schools, Xavier High School and Mercy High School; and two public high schools, Middletown High School and Vinal Technical High School. Middletown has two hospitals: Connecticut Valley Hospital and Middlesex Hospital. Use of asbestos-containing products was prevalent at these schools and hospitals as well as many manufacturing and construction jobsites in Middletown. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Middletown, you may be at risk to develop asbestos cancer.
