Manchester, Connecticut
Founded in 1672, Manchester is a thriving small city in the Hartford metro area with an estimated population of nearly 55,000. Manchester has a diverse industrial base of small to large firms in manufacturing, research and development, and distribution. The city has more than 1,000 acres of park land, and is home to Manchester Memorial Hospital, Manchester Community College.
Manchester was initially settled by English colonists as an agricultural community. Its natural resources, such as river and brooks, provided power for paper, lumber and textile industries. The town soon grew into a major manufacturing center. Cheney Brothers was founded in Manchester in 1838, and would become the world's largest silk mill - most famous for premium quality silk thread and fabrics - earning Manchester the name "Silktown". At the height of Cheney Brothers' success, the company employed 25% of Manchester’s residents. The Cheney family was known just as well for its generosity. By the 1920s, they built what was considered a "utopian industrial community" which included worker houses, schools, Cheney Hall, a public library, the Hall of Records, public utilities, and land for churches and parks. Also, during the 19th century, five paper mills were in operation, including Rogers Corporation. Everything from specialty carts and plow moldboards to needles to melodeons was made in Manchester. The town could pride itself on such commercial advances as having one of the first self-serve grocery stores in the United States, and for developing well-known products such as Bon Ami cleansing soap (Bon Ami Company). The town experienced significant commercial growth through the 1970s. The Manchester Historical Society and The Manchester Land Conservation Trust were formed to preserve the charm of Manchester. Since the 1990s, the most significant addition to the town has been the construction and development of the Buckland Hills Mall and surrounding retail stores.
Asbestos exposure in the workplace has been an enduring issue for Manchester for many years.
