Glastonbury, Connecticut

Glastonbury, settled in 1636 and incorporated in 1693, is a town in Hartford County, located in part along the Connecticut River. Glastonbury is the wealthiest town east of the Connecticut River in the state of Connecticut in terms of household income.

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, Glastonbury was primarily a shipbuilding town. However, by the mid-1800s prosperity continued in other industries, including manufacturing. The J.B. Williams Soap Factory opened in Glastonbury in the mid-1800s. It was the first commercial soap manufacturing business in the world. ‘Lectric Shave and Aqua Velva were two of the products made by J.B. Williams Soap Factory. Glastonbury’s industries supported the Union’s war effort during the Civil War. Cloth was made for Union troop uniforms at Hopewell Mills. In 1910, Harriman Motors established the first factory in Connecticut built specifically for the manufacture of commercial airplanes. The building still stands on Main Street. Also an agricultural town, J.H. Hale Orchards began in Glastonbury in 1866 with seven trees and by 1915, Hale Farms had over 350,000 peach trees on 1200 acres in two states (Connecticut and Georgia). with two locations in Connecticut and one location in Georgia. Known as the Peach King, Hale peaches were sold across the country under the slogan, “UC Top, UC all.” J. H. Hale Orchards became a pioneer in nationwide produce marketing. During the World Wars, Glastonbury factories provided leather and woolen goods to the military of Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the United States. The town of Glastonbury has also been home to feldspar mines and mills, granite quarries, cotton mills, paper mills, and the first producer of Britania Ware in the United States. Glastonbury is a town which is always changing and growing. It has played an integral role in all the great movements of American history and continues to make its mark today.
