Farmington, Connecticut

Farmington, incorporated in 1645, is located in the Farmington Valley area of central Connecticut along the Farmington River. George Washington, who traveled through town in the late 1700s, is said to have called Farmington "the village of pretty houses." As an affluent residential suburb of Hartford, Farmington is often regarded as one of the most posh and desirable communities in the area with an estimated population of 23,641.

In the 1600s, Fairfield’s main occupation was farming. In the late 1600s, a sawmill and gin still were built as well as a gristmill by the Farmington River and a fulling mill for processing homespun wool. The Farmington community prospered as the number of industries grew in the late 1700s. There were blacksmiths, tailors, clockmakers, cabinetmakers, silversmiths, goldsmiths, candle makers, shoemakers, and weavers. Factories manufactured linen, hats, leather goods, muskets, and buttons. Eventually, the town became a trading center, selling Yankee wares in the South and importing goods from as far away as China. Many of the homes built from the 1800s can be seen today in a walk down Farmington village's Main Street. These historic homes have survived modernization and development in part because the railroad and trolley tracks were not allowed in town. In the late 1900s, Sarah Porter, the founder of Miss Porter's School, demanded that no railroad or trolley tracks run in front of her school. Many of the historic buildings on Farmington’s Main Street are now part of the school.

Today, Farmington is home to the world headquarters of several corporations including Carrier Corporation, Carvel, and Otis Elevator Company. It is also home to University of Connecticut Health Center and the Westfarms Mall. The town of Farmington continues to fight to maintain the village aesthetic and requests for modifications and new development. In a continuing effort to promote a diverse population who live and work in a balanced combination of open space, residential housing and commercial properties supported by steady revenues.
