Fairfield, Connecticut

Fairfield is located on Long Island Sound between Bridgeport and Stamford. The town was settled in 1639. Fairfield is home to the headquarters of General Electric and Bigelow Tea Company. It is also home to institutions like Notre Dame High School, Fairfield Prep, Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University. In 2006, Fairfield was ranked the ninth "best place to live" in the United States, and the best place to live in the Northeast by Money Magazine.

Until the early 20th century, agriculture was the primary source of Fairfield’s prosperity. In the 18th century, corn, rye, wheat, and potatoes were the main crops grown for export as well as local consumption. Eventually, land was valued more for its development potential than for growing crops, and farmland was sold for homes, shopping centers and industry. Fairfield’s location along the coast of Long Island Sound provided good harbors, an advantage that generated significant prosperity in the 18th and 19th centuries through commerce and related maritime industries, including shipbuilding.

Just after World War I, Bridgeport's munitions industry prospered causing a housing shortage in the city, consequently many workers moved to Fairfield to build their homes. The trolley and later the automobile made Fairfield's countryside accessible to these newly affluent members of society. The prosperity lasted through the twenties. By the time of the stock market crash in 1929, the population had increased to 17,000 (from the 6,000 just before the war). The construction of the Connecticut Turnpike in the 1950s resulted in another wave of development for Fairfield. Today, Fairfield is home to more than 56,000 residents.
