East Haven, Connecticut

East Haven was originally named "Iron Works Village" because of the success of the iron works mill in the mid-17th century. Bordering the city of New Haven, the town was officially renamed East Haven when it was incorporated in 1785. East Haven is located in New Haven county and has an estimated population of 28,000.

The town of East Haven experienced a surge in its economy and population in the early 20th century. After World War II, families moved out of the large cities and into the rural areas like East Haven. The construction of Interstate 95 through the center of town in 1951 also attributed to the growth in East Haven's population. In the 1960s and 1970s, large retail stores and fast food franchises opened along both U.S. Route 1 and Route 80. In turn, condominiums were built, an Athletic Complex was constructed, and a new swimming pool was added to East Haven High School. Notable businesses located in East Haven include: Foxon Park Beverages—a soda manufacturer, Calabro Cheese Corporation—producer of Italian cheeses, and Town Fair Tire Center—the largest tire dealer in New England. In 2004, a restoration effort began with the intent to transform the downtown area back to that of an old New England town.
