East Hartford, Connecticut

When the first permanent colonists arrived in Hartford, in 1635, the east side of the Connecticut River was part of Hartford. In 1783, the General Assembly of Connecticut approved the incorporation of East Hartford nearly 60 years after the initial petition to establish a separate town from Hartford was submitted by residents. Today, East Hartford is a town in Hartford County with an estimated population of nearly 50,000.

East Hartford is home to Pratt & Whitney headquarters, an aircraft engine designer and manufacturer, whose manufacturing plant consumes a significant amount of East Hartford's area. At its peak, Pratt & Whitney employed tens of thousands of people; currently it employs about five thousand. East Hartford is also home to a Coca-Cola bottling plant and Goodwin College.
