Branford, Connecticut

Branford, initially called "Totoket" by the Mattabesech Indians, is a shoreline town located on Long Island Sound in New Haven County named by its settlers after Brentford, England.  The first settlement was established in 1644 and incorporated 41 years later in 1685.  Today, Branford is home to nearly 30,000 people according to 2005 Census Bureau estimates. Currently, the top employers in Branford include:  Blakeslee Prestress, Harco Laboratories, and Amtech.  Branford, known for high-technology companies, is headquarters to Curagen and 454 Life Sciences.

Early in Branford's history, Long Island Sound provided the settlers with a livelihood of shipbuilding and coastwise trade. Industry began in 1655 when the first iron furnace in Connecticut was set up and operated at Lake Saltonstall. Essentially an agricultural and shipping community until the completion of the railroad in the mid 1800’s, Branford was transformed forever with the advent of the industrial age. Two leading manufacturing companies founded during this era were the Malleable Iron Fittings Company (MIF) in 1854 and the Branford Lock Shop in 1862. Other industries founded during this same time that also impacted Branford's economic and population growth were Stony Creek quarries, Atlantic Wire Company and Crucible Steel Company. Eventually, the decline in the use of iron as piping material (50% of business) forced Malleable Iron Fittings to close its doors in 1971 due to their inability to compete in the marketplace; the loss of MIF had a profound economic impact on the community at large.  In turn, the 1980s and 1990s brought about a revitalization of the downtown and riverfront area restoring Branford’s long history as an industrial center.
