Bethel, Connecticut

Initially a parish of Danbury, Bethel became independent when it was incorporated as Connecticut's 154th town in 1855.  Bethel's current population is estimated to be just over 9,000.  Larger employers in Bethel include bicycle manufacturer Cannondale and battery manufacturer Duracell.   

Industry thrived in Bethel during the late 1700s to mid-1900s.  Factories produced slippers, shoes, corsets, silk, and bicycle seats. Between the early to mid-1800s, there were an estimated twenty factories solely dedicated to comb-making.  During 1920 and 1950, the town experienced growth as it developed into a regional trading center in building materials, fuel oil, coal, services and retail goods.  Bethel's most prosperous industry and the basis around which all activity would revolve, was the manufacture of hats for men, women and children.  This particular industry prospered until the mid-1960s when the last facility run by Barton Rough Hat Company closed.

As Bethel’s population increased and the number of businesses grew through the 1970s and 1980s, so did the residential and commercial building industry which created new housing developments and business parks.
