Grand Junction, Colorado

Situated 247 miles west-southwest of Denver, Grand Junction is the largest city in western Colorado and serves as county seat of Mesa County. The city is the primary commercial and transportation hub within the large area between the Green River and the Continental Divide. Grand Junction was originally home to the Ute people before being settled by white farmers in the 1880s. On July 22, 1882, Grand Junction became an incorporated city of Colorado.

Grand Junction's location at the confluence of the Grand River and Gunnison River helped propel the area toward economic prosperity. Early economic activities were comprised of farming and cattle raising, as well as retail sales such as gasoline, hunting, and fishing. Close to the turn of the century, Standard Oil Company's Rocky Mountain operations and Continental Oil & Transportation Company merged to become Continental Oil Company of Colorado. Continental Oil Company was successful in Colorado and by the 1930s, it had become a fully integrated oil company with assets in production, refining, and distribution. Grand Junction was also home to Climax Uranium Mill, a now decommissioned mill that provided uranium ore to the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Grand Junction's Climax Uranium Company thrived during the 1950s to 1970s, producing more than two million tons of ore and expanding to twelve buildings. More recently, Grand Junction has turned into a major mountain biking destination, attracting many bikers from all over the U.S. The permanent festival site for Country Jam, an event that draws thousands of country music fans annually since 1992, is also located in Grand Junction.

I Survived Cancer...Now What? Part 3: Role Changes

“In addition to the physical, mental, and emotional impacts of surviving cancer, there is also a major impact on the interpersonal relationships of a cancer survivor. Many of the various role and relationship changes can begin even before diagnosis, affecting everyone that a cancer patient interacts with and the social situations in which they find themselves. After diagnosis and treatment, there are other issues to be dealt with, which can have an effect on the survivor’s role in the family and social circles.”
